Leaving the Selous head by road to Kilwa.  The ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani were once the centre of trade along the entire East African coast and the driving force behind the complex networks of trade caravans and dhow expeditions that encouraged the Swahili to thrive and prosper. The coral and limestone walls of the old mosque, sultans’ palaces, and merchants’ houses are all the more sumptuous in their rather dilapidated state – fig tree roots weave in and out of old windows and the rustle of the ocean palms never far away.

Continue your journey to Mikindani where you can explore the town and enjoy a dhow trip and excursion to the Mnazi Bay Marine Park.

Situated on Tanzania’s northern Swahili Coast, 40 km south of Tanga, Panga is a hidden gem. At the point where the massive Pangani River empties itself into the Indian Ocean, a village has grown. Once a centre of Swahili trade with the African mainland, the town of Pangani is now a sleepy backwater far removed from its days of splendour.  Chill out on the beaches and explore the old town.

Mafia Island is a popular destination for visitors to relax after their safari and the island’s relaxed and secluded beaches offer privacy and comfort for discerning travellers. Mafia’s incredible and unspoilt dive sites have remained a well-kept secret of diving aficionados and beach recluses for years, but now the island is fast becoming a preferred destination. 

For centuries, the island was a trading stop for Shirazi merchants travelling up towards Persia and under the rule of the Omani sultanate in Zanzibar, vast coconut and cashew plantations flourished. Today, all that remain of the island’s prestigious past are the coral ruins on Chole Mjini, the small island just off Hore from Mafia where the Arab landowners lived a sumptuous life removed from their plantations and slaves. 

These days, Mafia’s remote location means it receives only the most selective visitors, but things are changing. The recent gazetting of Mafia Island Marine Park – the largest protected area in the Indian Ocean – to include surrounding villages in its conservation efforts means that the millions of fish and coral species that thrive in the warm waters of Mafia’s beaches will survive for decades to come.

Saadani is Tanzania's newest national park. The park covers 1000sq. km and is a unique wilderness - the heady mix of beach, bush and river - found nowhere else on the eastern African coastline. It is the range of different ecosystems that set Saadani apart from all other national parks and reserves in Tanzania, in the Wami River hippo and crocodile are prolific, literally a stone's throw from the open sea. Here also there is exceptional wildlife, particularly in the brackish waters of the river mouth, a favourite spot for pelicans and flamingos. Game is plentiful in the bush, predators jousting with plains animals and elephants have been seen on the beach before. The coastline at Saadani stretches to the horizon in both directions, a line of pure white sandy beach. The rich nutrients in the seawater attract prawns and other seafood that make feasts for the dining table. Areas along the coastline provide nesting grounds for turtles and dolphins are often seen around the sand island off shore.

The Selous Game Reserve is possibly Africa's last great wilderness.
