Oman Culture and Traditions

Oman is a traditional Muslim country, whose hospitality and warmth of nature is remarked upon by all who visit. As with any country the visitor should respect local traditions which in Oman means respectful dress and no public displays of affection. This generally means (for men and women alike) that no bare legs or shoulders should be on show. Women should cover their heads before entering a mosque and all should remove shoes. Similar standards of dress should be observed when visiting villages and towns that do not routinely have visits from tourists where traditional values are strongest.

Public hand-holding etc and kissing are frowned upon and it is respectful to observe this taboo.

Omani’s are welcoming and if invited into a home it is courteous to dress as above, women covering their head and all shoes being removed before entering the house.
