General Advice

Travellers’ cheques should be avoided as commission rates are high. Most travellers travel do so with either US$, Euros of £sterling cash, with $ being the most preferred, or by using the many ATMs that can be found in most towns visited by tourists.

Money Exchange

Almost all cities have official money changers either in the form of banks local money changers. Rates do vary, so it’s best to check a couple of offices.

ATM Availability

There are ATM machines in all cities and towns and many travellers manage fine travelling through the country relying solely on them. Make sure that when visiting more remote areas such as Dana Nature Reserve and the northwest that you have sufficient money or a trip to the nearest large town may be necessary. For more information check the Visa ATM locator, the MasterCard ATM locator or the American Express ATM locator for the addresses of ATMs around the world.

Credit Cards

Widely accepted in shops, hotels and larger restaurants throughout the country, often with a large commission added. You can also check the Visa, MasterCard or American Express locator pages.

Not recommended – as commission rates are high.

Other Information

Jordanian Dinar (JOD), locally JD. JD1 = 1000 fils; 10 fils = 1 piastre. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 JD. Coins are issued in denominations of 10, 250, 50, 100, 250 and 500 fils and 1 Dinar.
