MAURITANIA: UN lauds release of ousted Mauritanian president

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed reports of Mauritanian President Sidi Ould Sheikh Abdallahi's release from house arrest Sunday. But he said the military junta must go further and called for a restoration of "constitutional order".

Nouakchott - An unprecedentedly high level of bail has been set for Mauritania's former prime minister, ousted in a recent coup and facing trial in two cases of corruption, legal sources said Sunday. Bail of $396 000 was set for defendants in a case involving Air Mauritania, while bail in another case involving the sale of spoiled rice was set at five million ouguiyas. Sources close to the case denounced the level of bail in the first case, which they said was the highest ever set by a Mauritanian court and said an appeal was being considered. Charmonique Sana, 16, of Uitenhage High School was killed instantly.
