Warmed by the waters of the Gulf Stream, the western coast of the Svalbard archipelago is relatively ice free, considering its location, just 700 miles from the North Pole. Here, on the island of Spitsbergen, are the archipelagos only settlements – Spitsbergen’s capital, Longyearbyen, the polar research centre of Ny Alesund and the remote Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg.

Dramatic snow-capped peaks look down on deep fjords, and enormous glaciers, such as the impressive Monaco Glacier, named after Prince Louis of Monaco who led an expedition here. Western Svalbard is steeped in polar heritage, remote trappers’ huts can be visited in secluded bays, and it is from Ny Alesund that Roald Amundsen departed on his airship for his flight over the North Pole to Alaska in 1926.

A region that stands witness to impressive human endeavour, in a landscape that is awesome in every dimension, the icebergs, wildlife and botanical gems ensure that every curiosity is satisfied, with puffins and Arctic terns flying overhead, whales swimming off the coast and walrus colonising Moffen Island to the north, this is the most accessible part of the High Arctic, the realm of the polar bear.
