Western Sicily has the capital Palermo at its heart and with its wonderful architecture and nearby must-sees, such as Monreale is always a hit with visitors, but head out of town into its wild heart for even more.

To the west of the capital lies the medieval mountain-town of Erice and the island retreat of Mozia. Further south and you'll be able to visit magnificent ruins at Agrigento where the remarkable Valley of the Temples is awe-inspiring.

With towns and villages which have mafia links, fine food and great walking the west should not be overlooked.
