The region of Western Rwanda encompasses the lush dense Virunga Mountains and the beautiful Lake Kivu as well as being home to such destinations as Gisenyi, Nyungwe National Park, Butare and Volcanoes National Park.
Western Rwanda's national parks are famed for their primate spotting opportunities, especially gorillas. To see these spectacular creatures head to Volcanoes National Park or visit Nyungwe National Park in order to see chimpanzees.
However, the region's towns and cities should not be overlooked as they offer an authentic insight to local life in Rwanda. Head to Gisenyi for palm tree lined sandy beaches or Butare for fascinating museums and traditional dance displays.
