A plethora of national parks protecting rare flora and fauna and some of the best trekking in Nepal await those that are not deterred by the inaccessibility of the far west of Nepal. This culturally diverse region is made up of a melting pot of ethnic groups who live a mainly agricultural living against the backdrop of comparatively low mountains in valleys such as the fabled Tarap. Trekking routes wind their way through Hindu and Tibetan villages with routes such as Rara Lake, Dunai to Tarap and Phoksumdo Lake appealing for those in search of something different.

Indeed Rara National Park falls in the catchment area of the Karnali River, one of the three main river systems of Nepal. The habitat supports red panda, black bear, yellow-throated martin, ghoral, serow and musk deer. There have also been reported sightings of leopard and wolf making it a magnet for wildlife lovers.

The Karnali River is also a gem here in the west providing serious white-water rafting fun for the keen adrenaline junkie on what is generally a 10-day trip.
