The name of the state may be unfamiliar, but its legion of sights will ring many bells – Agra and the Taj Mahal, Lucknow, Varanasi, Fatehpur Sikri to mention just a few.
This is India’s heartland, a vast swathe of low-lying plain running to mountains in the northwest where it meets the border with the Kingdom of Nepal. Bounded on the west by the desert state of Rajasthan this is a rainbow land of different peoples where the multi-hued Indian culture has blossomed since time immemorial.
Blessed with a variety of cultural diversities, Uttar Pradesh, has been the hub of activity of historical and religious heroes like - Rama, Krishna and Buddha. The Mughals were here, leaving their mark at Agra and elsewhere, whilst at Varanasi the holy Ganges laps against the timeless ghats of the old town. The state has more than its fair share of such holy places, making it a lively state where there always seems to be a festival being celebrated.
The British courted the affections of the famous Nawabs of Oudh at Lucknow, a city of imambaras, gardens and palaces and a great destination for those that seek a slice of real India, whilst those in search of enlightenment can follow in the footsteps of the Buddha and visit Sarnath, Kushinagar and Sravasti.
In the state’s Dudhwa Tiger Reserve comes the opportunity of spotting one of these marvellous endangered animals – a highlight of any visit if you are lucky enough.
Allow time to explore one of India’s most visited yet least explored states and you will come away with a better understanding of the nation, its history, culture and wildlife.
