A vital, colourful blend of historic past and vibrant present, Delhi, capital of India typifies the soul of the country. Over thousands of years many mighty empires rose and fell here, their remains scattered throughout the wider city. Today, the city is a curious blend of the modern and traditional sky scrapers and beautiful gardens where wide, tree-lined avenues continue the Mughul passion for landscaping and architectural excellence.
Old Delhi is the city of the Mughals and it’s here that you’ll discover the Red Fort and immense Jama Masjid. Nearby the thronging bazaar of the famous Chandni Chowk continues today as it has for centuries. Nearby lies Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
In New Delhi roads radiate out from Connaught Place whose arcaded shops epitomise Raj-era style. Close by you’ll find the Jantar Mantar and Rajpath with the India Gate monument. Further afield and you’ll discover tombs to historical figures such as Humayun and Safdarjang, then the beautiful Bahai Temple, shaped like a lotus flower. Then there’s the Purana Qila, the Qutb Minar, Birla Mandir.
