One of Italy's smallest regions, Umbria is often unfairly overshadowed by its more-famous neighbour, Tuscany. This landlocked region is famous for its medieval character, its rolling hills dotted with castles, fortresses and well-preserved hill towns.

Highlights include the walled medieval city of Perugia - the regional capital, Todi, overlooking the Tiber and with its Duomo and picturesque main piazza and Orvieto with its volcanic landscape, Etruscan roots and papal connections and of course the pilgrimage city of Assisi.
