Famous for it's most southerly of positions and the axis upon which the earth rotates, one can take a visit here and circumnavigate the planet in a matter of seconds! Nearly 100 years ago, Scott was to condemn the South Pole as ’an awful place’ arriving after the Norwegians claimed the pole a month earlier. Seen to many as the most inhospitable and inaccessible place on earth, today one can visit in relative comfort, without enduring the hardships of a polar expedition.
Although the Antarctic Treaty ensures that nobody ‘owns’ any land on Antarctica, the US have commanded a base here since 1957 and travellers have begun to visit the base in the last few years only. Generally, access is by plane for the common man and the house re-mortgaging cost of a flight will ensure that you will stand at the South Pole.
The South Pole itself moves due to magnetic variation on an annual basis, but the ‘official’ pole is represented at the base and commemorated with a ring of flags of the 12 original Antarctic treaty signatories. The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Base has just been rebuilt and provides science and recreational facilities for the staff living and working there. There is also a dining room, shop and post office for you to send your officially posted postcards from, to prove ‘you were there!’
