For many travellers on their first visit to Ethiopia, the Historic Route in the north of the country is the obvious choice. With many of Ethiopia's big name attractions easily accessed by daily domestic flights (or a rugged 4x4 tour), this classic circuit can be enjoyed in as little as a week, but is more rewarding in a fortnight.

With ancient churches including several rock-hewn World Heritage-listed monuments at Lalibela, ancient temples, palaces and castles at Gondar, tombs of previous Kings and Queens, religious manuscripts and a plethora of archaeological finds, this famous route in northern Ethiopia is simply unrivalled in Sub-Saharan Africa.

From Addis Ababa the usual first stop is at Bahar Dar to see Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile and the Blue Nile Falls. Then head north across Lake Tana (or drive around it) to see the ancient castles of Gondar. Next a drive north through the Simien mountains (or a short flight) leads to Axum. From Axum its onwards to Makale or Lalibela before returning to Addis Ababa.
