The vast Gobi Desert stirs the imagination of the intrepid traveller, epitomising for most an image of Mongolia. In contrast with the Sahara the Gobi of southern Mongolia is a vast expanse of gravel plains and rocky outcrops, rather than sand dunes, though these do exist, and spectacularly so, at Khongoryn Els where they rise up to 200m high.
These are part of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park and attractions include Yol Am – Eagle Valley, Bayanzag where the remains of dinosaurs and their eggs have been found. This is one of the largest World Biospheres, with an area larger than Switzerland and is home to the last remaining wild Bactrian camels, wild ass, and a small population of threatened Gobi bears, the only desert-inhabiting bear.
