The capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, is not without its colonial charm, but it is also a vibrant and modern city. Set in the highlands with easy access to the small Pacific coast of the country, the city is an ideal starting point from which to explore southern Honduras.
The less humid climate of the Pacific coast is the setting of its main city, Choluteca, a colonial gem with the best preserved historical architecture in the country. In addition to easy access west to bordering El Salvador and east to Nicaragua, two countries with which Honduras shares its Pacific ocean bay, the region is home to volcanic beaches, nature reserves and yet more colonial towns rich in history.
Tegucigalpa was not always the country's capital. The colonial city of Comayagua, not too far away, was the old centre of Government. It is said that President Marco Aurelio Soto in the late 1800s moved the capital to punish the people of Comayagua for publicly criticising his wife.
Urban legend has it that the statue of national hero Francisco Morazan in the city’s central square is in fact a cut-price, used statue of France’s Marshall Ney!
