Suðuroy, literally South Island, is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands that covers 164 square kilometres. The highest point of Suðuroy is the mountain Gluggarnir (610 metres), but the most famous peak is definitely the mountain of Beinisvørð west of the village Sumba. This island is separated from the others by a two-hour sail. This distance partly explains the uniqueness of the island, not only in language, but also in culture.
The island inhabitants are very friendly and its nature is pastoral and tempestuous. The entire west coast consists of birdcliffs broken by two narrow isthmuses, one at Hvalva and the other at Vagur. Both can be reached by car, which enables travellers to enjoy seeing this magnificent expanse of nature that is exceptionally idyllic.
