Southwest China is relatively little visited and yet is home to stunning mountain scenery, placid lakes, historic old towns and dozens of the country’s ethnic minorities. Yunnan is the “land beneath the clouds”, Guizhou and Guanxi has waterfalls and rural villages along with countless festivals to discover - here you can meet some of the country’s tribal peoples in settings which are as sublime as any in the country.
Lakes and temples, pagodas and palaces are all to be found in this region, the perfect place for adventure travel. You can trek the Tiger leaping Gorge to Daju, head to Zhongdian to discover Tibetan monasteries and placid lakes or make your way along the border with Burma, perhaps taking a boat into Indo China. Cycle around Dali and discover the magic of the Shangri La which is Lijiang before heading to Kunming and the dramatic Shilin Stone Forest.
