It’s no secret that Thailand has some of Asia’s, no, scratch that, the world’s, best beaches; fine white sand lapped by turquoise waters overhung by palm trees. Whereas some destinations disappoint the beaches around Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui, Ang Thong and Ko Phangan all seem to exceed travellers’ expectations and with so many islands and bays to choose from it’s not hard to find a quiet spot.

Phang nga Bay with its dramatic limestone outcrops and wonderful beaches offers, as do many places rather more action than just lying on a beach. As elsewhere in the south there’s diving, snorkelling, sea-kayaking and even surfing to enjoy and, at Railay and other locale’s, there’s rock climbing too.

Heading north you can explore a rainforest and its rivers on foot and by tube in Khao Sok National Park then head over to the east coast and the islands on Ko Samui and Ko Phangan where their full moon beach parties are not to be missed for those wanting a real Thai party experience. Need some R and R? Then head out by kayak to Ang Thong Marine Park or learn to dive on Ko Tao.

Coming full circle again you reach the islands south of Krabi where names such as Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta have been attracting those in search of peace and quiet for years and remain unspoilt havens of tranquillity.

Southern Thailand’s cultural heritage should not be overlooked too; with a strong maritime tradition the sea-gypsies of the south have their own way of life, food and the concept of sanuk – fun – remains, as ever, strong.
