Few towns in Mauritius can rival the historic style of Mahébourg, main town in this region of the island. Just off the coast of Mahébourg lies the popular Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve - with its beautiful lagoon, dense green canopy of forest and ruins of an old French lime kiln. Blue Bay is a Marine Park and popular beach with watersports available. It is the Savanne Coast further west, however, that has much of interest. Often referred to as the ‘Deep South’ this region has several diverse attractions ranging from the small seaside resort of Souillac with its rugged shore, to La Vanille Reserve des Mascareignes with giant tortoises, crocodiles and butterflies.
