Whereas northern Laos has Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Luang Nam Tha, southern Laos has Tham Kong Lo cave, Savannakhet, superb Wat Phu and the remarkable Bolaven Plateau – miss them at you cost!

Travelling in the south is harder and more rugged, even with modern road improvements and it’s the more intrepid travellers that head here. Heading south from Vientiane you should pause to wonder at the dramatic karst scenery and incredible cave of Tham Kong Lo that stretches an amazing 7km underground and enjoy the colonial feel of Savannakhet. Next head perhaps to the Bolaven Plateau, one of many National Biodiversity Conservation Areas – waterfalls, jungle trekking and amazing scenery can all be enjoyed.

Finally Wat Phu is a wonderful Khmer temple complex that provides a contrast to the typically Lao wats of the north and is a major pull for visitor to the south; chill out in Pakse after a visit.
