Petra lies deep in the heart of ancient Edom, since time immemorial its sandstone hills protecting the city from prying eyes, and enabling its Nabataean founders the security they needed to create what is today one of the world’s greatest ‘lost’ cities. The clichéd description of a ‘rose red city half as old as time’ is well deserved, its towering walls streaked with pinks, yellows and a hundred other shades.
In Wadi Rum the red theme continues where the burnt desert sands stretch between towering canyon walls almost 1,500m high. This is the land of the hardy and hospitable Bedouin people and a stay here in the wadi ranks as one of the must-do activities for travellers to the kingdom. Here you can ride camels or take a 4WD safari into the heart of the desert and camp beneath the stars, hearing stories of Lawrence of Arabia who passed this way, himself living with and uniting the Bedouin tribes of the region in the early 20th century.
At Aqaba in Jordan’s far south wash the dust from your mouth as you relax in a comfortable hotel and look forward to exploring the underwater wonderland that is the Red Sea. Here the warm waters teem with marine life and provide the perfect spot for some snorkelling or diving, for many the perfect end to a trip through this wonderful country.
