Lying to the south of Central Plains and Central Pacific regions, Southern Costa Rica remains one of the wildest and least visited parts of the country, partly due to its terrain and remote location.
The Pan American Highway cuts its way through the region towards the border with Panama, separating the southern Pacific coast from the country’s southern highlands.
The southern Pacific coastline offers little visited but world-class beaches, lodges, surf and mangroves, as well as the Isla del Caño off-shore, off which whales are so often seen, an underwater Ballena Marine National Park has been created. Here, it is possible to stay in remote eco-resorts attached to the breathtaking Osa Peninsula, Golfo Dulce or Corcovado National Park – described by National Geographic Magazine defines as ‘the planet’s biologically richest place’.
Inland, the region contains Costa Rica’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripo (at 3810 metres above sea level), the dramatically named Cerro de la Muerte, meaning ‘Mountain of Death’, and several of the country’s most important National Parks, such as the Parque International La Amistad and the Wilson Botanical Garden, said to be the best in the country.
The region is a magical place to visit, get off the beaten track and truly absorb the best of Costa Rica.
