The further South you go in Belize, the more off the beaten track it becomes, until finally reaching Belize’s ‘forgotten corner’ of Toledo District

The Southern Highway forms a corridor of communities displaying a vast variety of cultures and influences, located between two astounding natural phenomena, the Maya Mountains and the Belize Barrier Reef, with wonderful opportunities to enjoy both.

Visitors may choose to enjoy the beach and water sports lifestyle of Placencia and the many cayes located just off the coast, or explore the scenery and wildlife in the various inland and coastal nature reserves. There are little-explored Mayan ruins, surrounded by jungle, to be discovered; and forming a backdrop to all this is a rich tapestry of ethnicity, with both the Garifuna and modern Mayan cultures are well represented.

  • Get a little closer to the remarkably unique and enduring Garifuna culture in Dangriga, Hopkins or Barranco.
  • Enjoy a Mayan experience, both ancient and modern – visit the ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit and then stay with a Keckhi or Mopan Maya family in Blue Creek, Toledo.
  • Enjoy a boat ride then a snorkel, before lying in a hammock for a post-barbecue nap on one of the many cayes located off the coast.
