The southeast of Turkey is a land of high, barren mountains descending to hot plains. This is the land of the Commagene kings and before them the biblical prophet Abraham. Sometimes overlooked as it is difficult to get to the region has at least two important places to try and visit - Nemrut Dağ and Şanlıurfa.

The 2150m high mountain is thought to be the final resting place of Antiochus, King of the Commagenes and is where the enormous stone heads of Gods and himself sit unmoving as they have for centuries - few sights can compare.

Down on the plains travellers can discover the legends associated with Abraham in Şanlıurfa where the contrast of pools with fishes and rose gardens contrast starkly with rugged Mt Nemrut. Here there are narrow back streets to wander and citadels to discover before travelling south towards Syria to see unique beehive-shaped houses.
