From the Alps to the Mediterranean coast the southeast provides some of the classic images of rural France.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lyon is a great gateway to this region of adventure and culture. In the north one finds a land rich in woodland where the Jura and Alps provide the chance to explore by foot or mountain-bike, or try horse riding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The remarkably popular Savoie area is probably the best place in eastern France to head for, to embark on world-beating mountain walks, such as the superb Tour du Mont Blanc and others.

Further south the ancient cities of this region are filled with history, from Arles with its Roman UNESCO World Heritage Site monuments, to Avignon which has a history that goes back six centuries and is filled with historic treasures. For lovers of hiking, climbing and water-sports the Gorges du Verdon are unmissable with their 700m deep gorges, and of course who can forget the little villages and heady fields of lavender that epitomize the region.
