Windswept and arid Sal Island is the archipelago’s flattest island and the most developed for travel – home to a number of international hotels, restaurants and the nation’s principal airport. Famed for ‘Santa Maria’, its 8-km long south coast beach, the island is also a mecca for adrenaline sports enthusiasts in search of some of the best windsurfing, surfing, kite-surfing and deep-sea angling on earth. The diving isn’t too bad either!

Long in shape, Sal is 30km long by no more than 12km wide and was first discovered in 1460 when the island was christened with the name of ‘Llana’, meaning flat, due to its unusual relief.
