The most impressive geological features of Réunion are the Cirques - three calderas formed from the collapse of the enormous Piton des Neiges volcano. Cilaos is a pretty, flowery and peaceful little town accessed by a spectacular road. It is also the only thermal town in the Indian Ocean. Salazie is the larger and greener of the three Cirques, famed for its numerous sheer drop waterfalls and typical Creole architecture. Finally, Mafate – possibly the most spectacular – remote, dramatic, and considered a hiker’s paradise.
