Ice-bound throughout much of the year, the remote east of Spitsbergen and the Svalbard archipelago has no roads, no settlements and is truly Nature’s realm – the Kingdom of the Polar Bear.

Incorporating the eastern coast of Spitsbergen, the islands of Nordaustlandet, Barentsjokulen, Edgeoya and a multitude of small isles located in the Barents Sea, few people are lucky have the opportunity to witness this remote and desolate region. Forged by the elements, this rocky and icy landscape can only be reached by helicopter, sea plane or ship in the summer months.

Despite its harsh climate, the east is rich in wildlife. Aside from the magnificent polar bear, which is everyone’s highlight, here it is possible to see Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, seals, walrus and magnificent birdlife, including puffins and Arctic terns. Underfoot there are also many botanical gems, such as miniature flowers, grasses, lichens and mosses.

Exploring fjords and islands of remote eastern Svalbard in the company of knowledgeable local guides who bring the heritage and natural history of the region alive, is a unique and evocative experience.

Why Travel to Remote Eastern Svalbard?

  • As the winter ice retreats, sail through the narrow Hinlopenstretet that separates Spitsbergen island from Nordaustlandet.
  • Spot wildlife – with luck polar bears – from the bows of an expedition cruise ship.
  • Discover hidden fjords, where few have ventured before, where the air is filled with birdlife.
