Located in the northeast of Sudan, wedged between Egypt and Eritrea lies the Red Sea State, with Port Sudan as its capital and major port of the nation. The vast expanses of the Nubian Desert provide a major natural feature of the region, stretching from Northern Sudan into the Red Sea State.
Further south, Kassala State borders Eritrea and provides a land route through to Asmara, whilst a road from Al Qadarif leads to Lake Tana and Gondar in Ethiopia.
