Puglia forms the heel of the famous boot of Italy. A remote and largely overlooked and little-visited region it offers Baroque towns such as Martina Franca and the engaging Lecce - the 'Florence of the Baroque' - both of which see only a handful of visitors each day.
Gateway to Puglia is Bari, a town with a long history and many worthwhile attractions, whilst the green Itria Valley, a World Heritage Site, is famous for the unique, fairy-tale-like trulli houses; immediately recognisable by their conical roofs they epitomise Puglia for many. Cisternino sits above the valley and has a wonderful medieval centre of narrow traffic-free streets and Ostuni is the “white” town, perches like a wedding cake, on a hill. In Locorotondo, flowers adorn lovely balconies whilst Noci in Puglia’s rural heartland and the fishing village of Savelletri are delights to discover.
Head to Salento for fields of vineyards, Avetrana for a mediaeval castle. At the sea-side town of Gallipoli there's another lovely harbour backed by a tangle of narrow streets.
