Head northeast from Damascus and the desert envelops you in its stony and sandy embrace. This harsh landscape however is home to Bedouin, amazing desert castles and ancient civilisations.

2,300 year-old Dura Europos on the banks of the Euphrates marks a boundary of the Greek empire and sat on the Silk Road from Asia. To the south and close to Iraq the mud remains of Mari may look unprepossessing but is an ancient Sumerian and Amorite city that predates Dura Europos by 3000 years.

Both these sites whilst important are overshadowed by the justifiably romantic remains of Palmyra, known as The Bride of the Desert, and the desert caravanserais that litter the Syrian east.

If you are looking for tangible history in a dramatic setting, then head into the desert!
