The northwest region of Costa Rica runs from just north of Puntarenas and includes Monteverde, Cañas, Liberia and much of the province of Guanacaste, until it reaches the border of Nicaragua. The Nicoya Peninsula lies to the southwest of this region and, for the purposes of this guide, is covered in the Nicoya Peninsula & Central Pacific Coastline.
Stretching up to the border of Nicaragua and the main border crossing at La Cruz, this is a largely agricultural region based on cattle and crops. The most important town here is Liberia, capital of the Guanacaste province – a small, picturesque colonial town which is worth a brief visit. The highlights, however, are some of the outstanding National Parks.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, high up in the lush, misty hills, offers incredible trails, canopy walks and the opportunity to spot the resplendent, yet elusive, quetzal. Rincon de la Veija National Park contains impressive volcanoes, waterfalls, and dry tropical forests which continue west through the Guanacaste National Park to the protected coastal Santa Rosa National Park, which is important for a wide variety of wildlife, including marine turtles.
