Head west from Xian and pretty soon the land takes on a khaki colour, the only greenery coming from the irrigation given to the fields. This is where the Great Wall meets its end in a series of beacon towers as it struggles today to keep the desert winds at bay as it once did the northern nomads.

There are however great sights to discover, from the Taklamakan Desert, the massive fort at Jiayuguan, the stunning Mogao Caves at Dunhuang and the atmospheric Kashgar Sunday Market to once-great cities such as Jiahe and Gaochang and the caves at Bezeklik and the high mountains of the Tian Shan.

Adventure travel in the desert is never easy, always rewarding.
