The Red River cuts through northern Vietnam’s karst landscape to empty into the sea at stunning Halong Bay where limestone rocks provide a dramatic backdrop to boat and kayak trips. Hanoi with its remarkably atmospheric Old Quarter sits on the river whilst to the north the mountains rise high, sheltering hill tribe villages and giving protection to remarkable wildlife within their folds. Northern Vietnam is a diverse region in which one could spend an entire trip without running out of things to see and do and provides the perfect place from which to start an exploration of this always-surprising country.
