The northern part of Togo contrasts sharply with the south. Here, once on the plateau, the landscape changes quite dramatically. Wide open areas of scrub pastures interspersed with rock, give way to thicker and thicker vegetation.
Highlights include the Kara Valley, home of the Kabye. In the far north is Tamberma country. Here intrepid travellers can find some of the most beautiful architecture in Africa: fortified houses which resemble small clay castles.
