North of Bangkok the plains of central Thailand run into the hills of the north. This is an ancient region dotted with past capitals such as Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Lamphun, each of which has with stunning architecture.

Chiang Mai is popularly referred to as the ‘Rose of the North’ such is the beauty of this wonderful old walled city, a city blessed with a beautiful cultural personality of its own. Temples dot the town and overlooking it is the hilltop Doi Suthep – a must-see for every visitor. Its night-market is perhaps the most famous in Thailand and rightly an attraction in its own right.

Chiang Mai is also gateway to the active adventures of the north; with many different hilltribes living in the surrounding hills treks between villages with overnight stays as guests of the tribes themselves are popular ways to see these amazingly beautiful mountain areas. Travellers can even ride elephants deep into the jungle - a unique experience - and take a cookery course!
