The Northern Plains of Costa Rica spread from the Cordillera Central that borders the Central Valley to the border of Nicaragua.

Much of this area is relatively flat and given over to farmland – cattle ranching, pineapple plantations and sugar cane are common here – and with the exception of a handful of key tourist attractions, such as Sarapiqui, Arenal National Park and Cano Negro National Park, this is one of the less visited parts of the country.

The region contains several protected areas, lakes, lagoons, volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls.

Thanks to frequent rains, the Northern Zone features wet and evergreen forests as well as fertile plains—natural environments that serve as sanctuaries for water birds, reptiles, mammals and the prehistoric Gaspar fish, and important sites of interest for wildlife-lovers. The region’s rivers, such as Peñas Blancas, San Carlos, Toro, Puerto Viejo and Sarapiquí, are often important navigational routes and popular for adventure activities.

Forming part of the region is the Sarapiquí district, which, with its rich biodiversity, is recognized as a scientific research site and the last stronghold of endangered species such as the great green macaw. The region is famous for the turnos (outdoor parties or festivals) held in its towns, with bull riding and livestock auctions.
