From the capital, Muscat, the beautiful Batinah coastal beaches sweep west and north towards the border with the UAE. On the horizon the ‘green mountains’ of the Jebel Akhdar and Hajars soar to an amazing 3,048m at Jebel Shams and, held within their folds, are countless difficult-to-reach and perilously positioned completely traditional Omani villages.
Clustered around the foothills well-restored desert forts such as those at Nakhl, Rustaq and Nizwa have sand-coloured turrets, walls and towers that are an impressive reminder of the importance of the ancient trade routes that criss-crossed the country. Green oases of palms, life-giving falaj water-systems and local Bedouin markets are all found here as the Wahiba Sands loom ahead.
Here a vast, undulating sand sea 180km by 80km is home to the Bedu of the Janabah, Mawalik, Hikman, Amr and Wahiba tribes and much difficult to see wildlife. With dunes up to 100m high this environment provides exciting opportunities to explore by 4WD, overnighting in desert camps before arriving at the coast.
With some poor roads development is low-key, leaving some unspoiled beaches that remain the nesting-grounds for turtles. Along this coast discover the traditional dhow-building town of Sur, go canyoning through the water filled Wadi Shab or watch birds at Ayga or Masirah Islands.
The north of Oman arguably has the most to offer the lover of culture and the great outdoors and is one of the world’s least-visited yet greatest adventure destinations.
