With some of the country’s major highlights northern Laos embodies what most people come to see.
Explore the Mekong with the classic boat journey that links Huay Xai and Luang Prabang via the caves at Pak Ou. On arrival in Luang Prabang, the nation’s cultural capital, there are countless UNESCO-recognised gilded temples to discover, as well as colonial architecture and markets. To the east lies the mysterious Plain Of Jars and Vieng Xai site of breathtaking scenery and impressive caves.
In the north head to the hills, Nam Ha Npa Protected Area or indeed almost anywhere off the beaten track to discover wonderful flora and fauna, friendly hill tribes and a side of SE Asia you thought had disappeared as you trek through some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes. Finally there’s Vieng Viang – relaxed backpacker centre - time to chill out and so some cycling, tubing and enjoying great food.
