Amman, like Rome, straddles 7 hills and is the cosmopolitan capital of Jordan. North from the city the hills are broken by deep wadis which twist their way towards Jerash, one of the world’s best-preserved Greco-Roman towns and a principle draw for visitors to the desert kingdom.

Further west and the hills, the famous Gilead Hills of the bible, climb even higher to towns like Ajlun where a 800-year old Arab castle perches atop a hill guarding the approach from the north and west. Beyond and the land falls away to Jordan’s market garden region, the lush and fertile Jordan Valley where the country’s vegetables are grown.

By the Syrian border the hills rise once again to provide a lookout point for another familiar biblical name, Gadara, today’s Umm Qais. This area is littered with historical remains and provides visitors with a contrast to the dramatic deserts and stark mountains which lie to the south.

Why Travel to Northern Jordan?

  • Jerash is one of Jordan’s principle attractions, a Greco-Roman city whose theatre stills shows seat numbers and chariot tracks can be seen in the main street.
  • Sit in the theatre at Umm Qais and look out over the Sea of Galilee
  • Explore Ajlun Castle then maybe take a walk in the nearby Zubia Nature Reserve, beautiful in springtime
