With the huge lake of Tonle Sap and Angkor Wat at its centre northern Cambodia is the main destination for most visitors to the country, however there is far more besides. The region bristles with Khmer attractions such as Prasat Preah Vihear and Preah Khan – temple sites to give some of Angkor’s ruins a run for their money.

The ruins of Sambor Prei near Kompong Thom date back to pre-Angkor times, Banteay Chhmar has huge faces carved into its towers whilst Phnom Suntuk has a tremendous reclining Buddha. Meanwhile why not take a boat trip from the colonial riverside town of Battambang to the stilt villages of the Tonle Sap, an attraction in their own right.
