Often overlooked by visitors the northeast of Thailand is a little-visited gem of a region with much to recommend it. Known as Isan within the country this is the region to visit for a glimpse of Thailand as it was before visitor numbers increased.

There are several worthwhile sites to track down such as the one at Prasat Khao Phra Wihan, actually in Cambodia but accessible only from Thailand, and Phanom Rung whose volcano-top location is Thailand’s best Khmer-era temple complex!

The area is littered with national parksKhao Yai, a World Heritage Site known for its wild elephant, tigers, leopards and hornbills, and Phu Kradung National Park, a higher altitude, temperate area also with its fair share of exotic wildlife.

Come to the northeast to sit by the Mekong at Nong Khai (or nip over the border into Laos), explore silk-weaving workshops, participate in stunning local festivals, discover traditions foreign elsewhere in the country, wander farm tracks by bicycle and see internationally important temples such as Wat Phra That Phanom and Wat Phra That Bang Phuan.

Isaan is much, much more than a backwater!
