The extreme north east of India is made up of the seven states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur, with the Himalayan border state of Sikkim often included. Travel here is difficult with poor roads and infrastructure to support "tourists". Instead it is the intrepid traveller who makes it here, and the rewards are boundless.

The region's natural isolation combined with its proximity to neighbouring states makes this one of the most intriguing areas to visit in India. Tribal cultures remain intensly strong, untainted by exposure to the travelling masses and manifest wherever one travels. Add to this magnificent scenery and natural wildernesses of places such as Manas and Kaziranga National Parks - strongholds of the Indian one-horned rhino and other stunning wildlife, Tawang - the world's 2nd largest Buddhist monastery, the hillstation of ShillongMajuli Island  - the world's largest river island and many tea estates and you can see just why north east India is beloved of those that make it here.
