Newfoundland and Labrador is the tenth and latest to join the Confederation. Geographically, the state consists of the island of Newfoundland and the mainland Labrador, on Canada's Atlantic coast. On entry into Canada in 1949, the entire state was known as Newfoundland, but since 1964 the state's government has referred to itself as the "Government of Newfoundland and Labrador" and on December 6 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to "Newfoundland and Labrador." In day-to-day conversation, however, Canadians generally still refer to the state itself as "Newfoundland" and to the region within the province as "Labrador."
Here visitors can see whales, puffins and moose at St. Anthony, hike the East Coast Trail across cliffs and through forests, enjoy a snowmobile trip in Stephenville or go skiing at Marble Mountain. For outdoor lovers there is something for everyone in this region.
