The Terai is the low-lying plain of Nepal that adjoins India, home to two cracking National Parks and the holy town of Janakpur. For many missing a visit to Chitwan National Park as part of their visit to Nepal is unthinkable, home as it is to a magnificent range of endangered wildlife such as the one-horned Indian rhinoceros and the royal Bengal tiger. West of Chitwan at Bardia National Park sits on the eastern banks of the Karnali river, about 400 kms west of Kathmandu. This park too has much to offer in terms of wildlife with black buck, hog deer, sambar, wild-boar and of course its famous small herds of rarely seen wild elephants. With more than 350 bird species recorded in both Chitwan and Bardia they are bird watchers’ paradises too.
Few travellers make it to the medieval town of Tansen which makes a visit rather special. Given that the steep town centre is largely traffic free, a wander around the cobbled alleyways is a delight, whilst there are many rewarding walks in the area. Further east lies holy Janakpur, one of the oldest and most famous cities of Nepal with links to Sita of Ramayana fame. Today it still has its own language, script and a rich artistic tradition and culture: the religious Mithila art is well known in the local and international art world. Janakpur is a city of dozens of holy pools and ancient sites, the most famous of which is the Janaki temple.
As we see, the Terai has much to interest visitors to Nepal and should be included on any visit wherever possible.
