The Maldives consist of 1190 beautiful tropical islands, spread over 26 atolls and have evolved as a byword for desert island luxury for those seeking a little R and R. With only around  200 islands inhabited this is one place where finding your own private beach shouldn't be too difficult.

The capital Male is located on the North Male atoll which is part of the Male atoll group, in the middle of the Maldives atoll chain. A small but vibrant island, it is the seat of government and the centre of trade and is an interesting place to visit to learn a little about Maldivian culture. The tropical islands' main draw however are as a major destination for diving divers, with fabulous reefs and a wealth of marine life. There are countless dive sites throughout the country, some of which are ranked among the best in the world and you can enjoy both shore dives and liveaboard dives.

Other atoll groups to the north of the Male atoll include the Thiladhunmati, Miladhummadulhu, Faadhippolhu and Maalhosmadulhu atolls. The islands here are not all inhabited but have all the same characteristics, with lagoons, reefs and white sands.

Sun, sand, turquoise seas, dazzling underwater coral gardens and tropical marine life make a perfect natural combination for the ideal tropical holiday destination.
