The region of Lassithi and Eastern Crete is less developed than other areas and, despite some development of larger resorts, it is likely to stay this way.
Agios Nikolaos is the largest town in the province and is a good base from which you can explore the area. Elounda, with Spinalonga Island a little off shore, is rather more sedate.
The Lassithi Plateau, once covered by thousands of windmills, has the Diktian Cave – home, it is said, to the baby Zeus. Near Kritsa, the church of The Panaghia Kera, founded in the 13th century, contains magnificent frescoes. Here too is Lato – an ancient site with wonderful views across to the sea. Gournia, to the east, is the best preserved Minoan site on the island and is also one of the least visited.
Further east is Vai Beach, a tropical paradise of sand and palm trees and Zakros, with a further ancient site – the most important in the region – and the gorge, known as The Valley of the Dead because of its rock tombs. Sitea is a working Cretan fishing port situated on a wide sweeping bay where you can sit with a leisurely drink (the area is famous for its wine) and watch every-day life going on around you.
On the south coast, Ierapetra has a Mediterranean feel with different coloured houses, a Venetian port and harbour. Ierepetra is the centre of Crete’s most important farming region and has a superb beach.
