Ladakh and northern India is a region of stark beauty, glorious fertile valleys, icy rivers, jeep-only mountain tracks, gompas, temples and sadhus the far north is a contrast to the southern plains. If you are looking for a true adventure holiday in India, then head to the northern states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and ‘J & K’ – Jammu and Kashmir.
Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have snowy peaks, crystal clear lakes and opportunities for walking holidays exploring flower-covered valleys. You can head to Haridwar or Naini Tal and follow a trail to the source of the Ganges, or just wander the valleys meeting the nomadic shepherds that call this region home.
Further north one comes to Kashmir and the famous lakeside town of Srinagar, where houseboats bob on Dal Lake. From here the roads head into the mountains, beyond the reach of the monsoon rains and to Ladakh and Zanskar, Spiti and Lahaul.
Here in this high altitude desert the Tibetan influence is strong with gompas looking down on dusty tracks and glacier-fed rivers. You’ll need a 4WD to explore here and it’s the perfect place for walking and trekking in India’s far north.
