Mountainous and with fertile valleys Kyushu is Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu. As an early centre of Japanese culture it offers many historic treasures along with great natural beauty.

Fukuoka is the largest city on Kyushu and has samurai links as well as a castle, as do Kagoshima and Kumamoto. Mt Aso is great for walking and Dazaifu is an ancient administrative and home to Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine.

Finally Beppu is well-known throughout Japan for its hot springs and associated baths, mud baths, sand baths and steam baths.
