The very name Kathmandu conjures up images of pagoda-like temples, the smell of incense and dramatic mountains and the wonder is it’s all true! Fringed by high hills beyond which can be glimpsed the icy peaks of the Himalayas, Kathmandu and the other ancient capitals of the Valley – Patan and Bhaktapur - have medieval hearts where ornately-carved wooden windows look out onto narrow streets thronged with people shopping for all manner of goods in vibrant bazaars. There are countless temples and shrines to discover from the white dome of Bodhnath to riverside Pashupatinath, and several World Heritage Sites to explore. Ride a bike or ramble through the countryside to outlying villages, join the celebrations in one of the dozens of festivals and plan a trek, rafting trip or wildlife safari from your seat in one of Kathmandu’s renowned cafes. The Kathmandu Valley encompasses the entire country in its few square miles, a microcosm of Nepal and a wonderful place to spend a few days.
